One of the things we never got to talk about after E3 was the amazing experiences we had with the Vita. We had a huge indie/Vita feature planned and it never got off the ground, but if it HAD, one of the highlights would have been the time we spent with Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate. You'd think with an unwieldy title like that it would be closely related to Batman: Arkham Origins which is coming to the PS3 around the same time.

You would, however, not be all that correct. While Blackgate does feature a similar combat mechanic to its bigger cousins the gameplay is decidedly different. Most of the action takes place in a pseudo-2D world that has the feel of your favorite Metroidvania game. The art style is much more similar to a comic book paneled art feel

The one level we ran through at E3 felt FANTASTIC on the Vita and the combat translated really well on a handheld, especially since it is restricted to a single plane of movement for the most part. The game felt really fun and the opportunity to explore for secrets and hidden levels gave us the impression it would be a deep experience. I found myself grinning madly as I pulled off 12x combos flying around the screen like I knew what I was doing.

Check out the "New Management" trailer below that alludes to a bit of the Blackgate backstory and shows you some glimpses of the game in action. With this and Killzone: Mercenary right around the corner could the Vita finally be coming into its own?
