So, Vita. You know the details and I'm sure many of you have been salivating about having Sony's new handheld in your pocket. The only thing that was a bit foggy was the release date. Originally there was some hope that it would come out in November or December of this year before getting pushed back to some point next year.

Well, today's Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco finally gave us an answer. Mark your calendars, put a reminder in your iPhones, put up a post it note, whatever it is you do, remember this date: February 22, 2012. That is when you can expect to get your hands on this baby, pending if you pre-ordered or stand in line or just bum one off of Craigslist or something. The MSRP is $249.99 if you just want Wi-Fi and for an extra $50 you can get some 3G action (bringing the whole kit and caboodle to a penny shy of $300). This date is for the United States, Canada, Latin America, and Europe and there's a good chance if you're reading this you're from one of those areas. If so, congrats! If not, then you have my deepest apologies.

"PlayStation Vita will redefine traditional boundaries of gaming and blur the lines between entertainment and reality. Its launch will serve as a pivotal point in the history of portable gaming and create a new fan base of PlayStation gamers for generations to come," said Jack Tretton, president and chief executive officer, SCEA. "With its technological prowess and social connectivity, PlayStation Vita offers an experience beyond anything available on the market. Features such as the dual analog sticks, dual cameras, and front and rear touch pad are all designed to deliver the unique, powerful gameplay experiences consumers have been asking for and enable new ways for users to connect with the world around them."

There's a multitude of games in development, ranging from Uncharted: Golden Abyss to WipEout 2048 to Army Corps of Hell. You can also expect to see some the Assassin's Creed, Resistance, and Call of Duty franchises to grace the platform just to name a few off the top of my head and from the press release. There's also a multitude of applications, including Facebook, foursquare, Skype, and Twitter.

So with the date now official I hope you go ahead and rush to your local retailer (or hop on Amazon) and reserve your spot in line. We all know how crazy these new releases can get and the last thing you want is to be the one guy with a pre-order receipt who gets left out in the cold because they were too late. Be sure to check back here in the not-too-distant future for a launch blowout including the launch lineup, previews, and all sorts of other amazing things.
