For a while now, Eidos has clammed up about their plans for Lara Croft's next tomb raiding adventure. Dubbed simply Tomb Raider: Anniversary the project started out as a pet project for Core Design (under the name Tomb Raider: Anniversary Edition, the original developers of the project, and offered an impressive level of detail for a PSP game still in the concept phase.

Of course, Core is no longer working on the series they built (in fact, most of the staff have moved elsewhere), and that task has instead fallen to the capable hands of Crystal Dynamics, who managed to revive the series with a single game. Now, it would seem Crystal is working on reviving Core's project -- or at least continuing the name, and though it's unclear how much of the project was originally a remake, the now solidified version of Anniversary is most definitely a new adventure.

Okay, so that's not entirely true. Think of it as a reimagining of the first game that catapulted the buxom (and, at the time, rather pointy-breasted) starlet into the role of the games industry's first spokesperson (yes, we're good little Eidos PR spin machine regurgitators, aren't we?), where her new adventure will combine the physics-based puzzles and decidedly non-clunky controls that Crystal D nailed with their first TR offering, but set in locales made famous by the first game. Which of course means that it we don't see a T-Rex seconds before it bites Lara in half, we're going to be doing some biting of our own.

"Lara Croft is more than just a video game character - she is a digital-celebrity and icon for the video game industry, as well as a strong, powerful character that people of all ages connect with," faithfully barked Eidos' Director of Marketing, Matt Gorman. "We are re-telling an incredible story using today's technology, we've taken all of the key moments from the original game and put them into the context of a brand new Tomb Raider adventure."

"We've captured the essence of what made the original game so special and with today's technology, created a game that pushes the boundaries of the current gaming consoles. Tomb Raider: Anniversary is a special celebration of Lara's reign as videogaming's leading lady," said Eidos head cheese Ian Livingstone.

The name change is a subtle one, but there's a good reason for the drop of the whole "10th" part, as the game won't see release in 2006, a decade after the first game made a splash. Instead, things have slipped a little to Spring of 2007, which is continuing to shape up to be almost as packed with must-have titles as the end of 2006 is going to be. Oh, and about that screenshot?
