Begin the Dark Resurrection
First details on Namco's PSP killer app.
Published: February 17, 2006
Late yesterday evening, 10 little screenshots floated into our inbox along with a simple PDF and a tiny Word document. As we started thumbing through the screenshots, it quickly became obvious that Namco had become intimately familiar with the PSP hardware in the short time they'd been working with it.
They had gotten touchy-feely enough to start porting one of their biggest franchises to the little portable that could. Tekken: Dark Resurrection is coming, and holy crap does it look sexy.
"We are very excited that the action-packed fighting world of Tekken is coming for the first time to the PSP system," squealed Yoshi Niki, Business Unit Director at NAMCO BANDAI. "Having the furious fighting action online through the multiplayer wireless connectivity will enhance the Tekken experience and make it the must have PSP system title in Summer 2006."
Precious little has been made public about the American release of the game, but Namco was happy to mention that the game will indeed have Wi-Fi multiplayer (though it's purely Ad-Hoc, so no online dream matches from the can, kids, sorry. Two new characters will join the King of Iron Fist Tournament, blonde cutie Lili and Dragunov, who we sadly have no pics of... yet.
The game will seek to bring back most of the familiar cast, plus a handful of classics, including Armor King, and introduces mini-games in lieu of the Tekken Force modes that have been added in past games (this is probably a good thing, as TF hasn't been good since Tekken 3, and the Jin add-on in Tekken 5 was an abomination). Exactly what the mini-games will entail is still under wraps.
Speaking of Tekken 5, the customization features that Namco introduced in their last PS2 entry are being ported part and parcel to the PSP, but in the process they'll actually pick up twice the customization options as what was seen on the big black brick. The custom tweaked characters can then be shared with other players via wireless connections.
There's pleeenty more Namco will start to share with us as we get closer to the Summer release date, but if nothing else, you can take a peek at the purdy screenshots and wonder how the hell they managed to cram so much detail into both the characters AND backgrounds -- especially the auroras. Now to count the days until we can see it running in motion...
