Dante's Inferno has been an inspiration for a myriad of different outlets, but we're fairly sure most don't come close to touching the sheer craziness of robots fighting in pyramidal towers with randomly created levels floating over the charred remains of a post-apocalyptic Earth. But then Rengoku isn't really like any other PSP game.

If that intro didn't scare you away, or, better yet, actually piqued your interest, then you'll probably be happy to know that Konami's bizarre robot-on-robot sci-fi action offering has finally shipped to stores. Now you too can ponder the meaning of existence as you hack and blast your way up through eight levels of the mysterious Tower of Purgatory to confront... well, we don't really know what.

"By utilizing the system's innovative wireless technology and amazing graphics, Rengoku provides non-stop action with brilliant visuals and delivers an incredible portable gaming experience to consumers," explains Wilson Cheng, Konami Product Manager and International SuperPimp.

Rengoku's distinct visual style and overall themes come courtesy of Japanese illustrator Jun Suemi, who crafted the sort of anorexic metallic mummified-flesh-on-bones look of the robots and the world they now mindlessly destroy each other in. We gave the game a brief run-through at Konami's Gamers' Day event here in San Francisco a while back, and you can dig on our initial impressions while you wait for the full review in a few days.
