Race Driver 2006 Revs Up
Codemasters to bring an enhanced TOCA Race Driver 2 to the PSP.
Published: January 25, 2006
Just when we were through gushing over how nicely TOCA Race Driver 3 was shaping up, Codemasters just had to go ahead and announce its trademark racing series would be crossing the line into handheld territory. Titled Race Driver 2006, it's a tuned-up and expanded remake of the second TOCA game (supposedly a real hit in Europe), except... y'know, portable.
The features are bountiful, and hell if we're not going to be copying and pasting most of 'em, just so you can run off to your fellow motorhead and rave, "Look, they're including this car!" Prepare to get your race on in a smorgasbord of events, which include GT Sports Car Racing, Street Racing, Rally, DTM, V8 Supercars, Global GT Lights, Rally Cross, Formula Ford, Open Wheel Grand Prix, Classic Car Racing, Super Truck racing, Stockcar Oval Racing, Ice-Racing, Convertible Racing, and Performance Car.
Codemasters promises a whopping 21 cars can squeeze onto the screen at once, all of them real performance rides with real physics and real damage. It's all real, man.
Oh, and as for vehicles? We'll be damned if over 50 of 'em won't be making their way into the game, starring the Buick Gran Sport 455, Pontiac Firebird Formula 400, Dodge Charger, Gemballa GTR 750 EVO, Koenig GT and Koenig GTD. But what's the good in having a race monster if you can't put it to the test? Lucky there are 60+ circuits to burn rubber on, ten of them (Nashville Super Speedway and Shanghai, for starters) being all-new international tracks.
Mode-wise, the Trans-World Cup is especially tuned for the PSP, making for intense racing in short bursts of time. The extensive Career Mode from TOCA Race Driver 2 also makes an appearance in its entirety, sure to fill you with the vicarious satisfaction of going from zero to hero. Revised Time Trial and Free Race modes are here to boot, and not to miss out on some truly tantalizing multiplayer potential, Race Driver 2006 allows for up to 12 players to put the pedal to the metal in an all-new WLAN mode. That's right, we used a racing cliché.
This fuel-injected portable package that is Race Driver 2006 will be getting the green light in May. Who would we be not to leave you with a batch of tasty screenshots? Commies, that's who!
