R-Type Command Blasting off This May

The celebrated side scroller is entering new territory

Atlus U.S.A, Inc., celebrated for their quirky RPGs and other games, is delving into turn-based strategy territory with a classic series that is certain to impress. R-Type Command, the spiritual successor to the side-scrolling shooters, is coming exclusively to the PlayStation Portable on May 6th for the MSRP of $39.99.

Players will face off against the Bydo, the mysterious alien race seeking to annihilate humanity by any means necessary. After sending wave upon wave of fighters into Bydo space in an effort to fight off the vicious alien species, mankind's only hope lies with a lone commander, sent to lead a small armada into the heart of the empire. After things go awry, he finds himself scavenging for available resources and equipment in hopes of completing his mission and making it home alive.

The move into turn-based strategy was a risky one but it looks like Atlus has managed to pull it off with some finesse. By adding excellent features to the game, they have created a classic among a series of classics. Along with the humans, R-Type Command will let players control the Bydo forces for the first time in the series. Launch an assault on Earth and destroy humanity at long last. The intense gameplay from both sides will open up 100 different units that players can either purchase or upgrade as they see fit. And if that wasn't enough, play against a friend with Wireless Ad Hoc mode.

It's been a long time coming but Atlus has certainly pulled it off. If the classic games were looking a little long in the tooth, R-Type Command is sure to make players take notice. After all, what better way to destroy humanity, or save it, than with the game that started it all?
