¡Libertad!
Hm, that was supposed to be a Scarface reference, but just take it as a lead-in to SCEA's announcement of Killzone: Liberation.

If you'll recall from late last year, Sony Computer Entertainment made its first in what we assume to be several moves to acquire reliable development teams by scooping up Killzone creators Guerrilla Games (with Zipper Interactive to follow). As Sony blurted at the time of acquisition, the development team from Amsterdam was indeed looking to introduce its postmodern war-ridden shooter to the handheld realm.
Which brings us to today's news, as Sony Computer Entertainment America has officially announced Killzone: Liberation for the PSP. The game picks up from the events of the original Killzone, but instead of throwing you into the first-person with weapon in-hand, offers a third-person action experience.
"We were keen to ensure Killzone: Liberation was totally unique and offered PSP owners a different Killzone experience. So, Killzone: Liberation has been developed from scratch -- creating what we think is an intense portable gaming experience," explained Hermen Hulst, Guerilla Managing Director. "Although Killzone: Liberation is totally new it stays true to what made the first Killzone such a great success -- the characters, weapons, style and a continuation of the same great plot."
With the Helghast, under the rule of General Metrac, still having seizure over southern Vetka, players must once again set out as Templar on a covert operation. Through various missions, he'll have to rescue hostages that Metrac himself has captured, all the while aiding the ISA in the fight for freedom.
The entire series of events will play out through an "intelligent" third person camera, allowing for tactical surveillance of what the enemy is up to. As was prevalent in the original game, Killzone: Liberation sports all the realistic grit and grime to be expected from the war-torn environment. Oh yeah, and there are guns. Lots of 'em.
Killzone: Liberation sets out to retail in Q4 2006, a release date that will inevitably specify to a tee over the next few months. And now, first screens await you!
