A Showdown at Retailers
Activision and Rebellion's pint-sized take on the Old West has arrived.
Published: October 10, 2006
It's been nearly a year since Tony Hawk maestros released their first non-skateboarding title in over half a decade. That's a lot of Christ Airs and Darkside Grinds to put under your belt before trying something new. And GUN was new -- not just for Neversoft, but for the PS2 in general. Yes, there had been digital versions of the Old West created before, but GUN's vision of a brutal, lawless, revenge-soaked frontier was as different as you can get from the spaghetti western style of the equally good Red Dead Revolver while still staying in the same time frame.
But the game wasn't perfect; it was a little on the skimp side for most, and as we explained in our preview last month, UK-based developer Rebellion wanted to help out with that. They added back in five missions that were left on the cutting room floor of the original release and created Ad-Hoc (or botmatch) multi-player modes to help thicken things up. The result? GUN Showdown
"GUN Showdown lets players experience the renegade nature and gritty lawlessness of the West all in the palm of their hands," intoned Will Kassoy, Activision's senior VP of global brand management. "With pick up and play action and all-new wireless multiplayer functionality, GUN Showdown adds to all of the great elements of the original console game and delivers the ultimate in PSP system action."
And now, finally, the game is finished and headed to stores. We'll have a review of things shortly, but in the mean time, do be sure to check out our preview to get the scoop on things.
