Activision seems to have a pretty simple formula for success when it comes to the PSP market. Step One: Take one of its better known console franchises and uh, Step Two: make it portable, and cram in a load of features to make up for the lack of ingenuity. Simple, right?

Tried and true it must be, because today Activision has announced its giving the same treatment to its spaghetti Western-based action game, Gun (or if you're feeling particularly saucy, GUN), in the form of Gun Showdown (Step Three: Can't forget that catchy subtitle!).

In development by the superduo of Rebellion Studios and Neversoft Entertainment, Showdown once again sees players as Colton White, the master gunslinger who's out for revenge in a place where he may not easily find it: the Wild West circa the late 1800s. A place where good and evil were anything but divided, greed, lust and brutality were a way of life, and innocent bystanders were shot on site just for obeying the law. Yeah, those were rough times.

And the action-packed single player is just the start of things. After all, this is the PSP we're talking about. Also packed in are all-new side missions, quick-play modes, multiplayer modes and a host of other PSP-exclusive gameplay features. If it's country-style karaoke you're looking for, though, we might have to direct you elsewhere.

Gun Showdown has currently got its sights set on a fall 2006 release, but we'll have that sucker narrowed down just as soon as we hold Activision ransom for it. Or... just do like everyone else does and find out at E3. So much for those reckless tactics of journalism...
