Many a night we TotalPlayStation editors sit around and discuss the state of the PSP game library. Part of this is because most of us are shiftless layabouts with no home to go to, and part is because it's a total lie that we hang out in any capacity. We do bat around an occasional "what-if" and "how come" bit of banter, though, and one of the biggest question marks about the PSP lineup so far has been the lack of any real turn-based goodies.

Role-playing games and turn-based strategy offerings are few and far between. Sure, we've got Metal Gear Ac!d, and the upcoming port of Ys, but there's still a distinct lack of the kind of games that would seem most at home on a portable system with as much juice as the PSP.

It would appear that we're not the only ones that have noticed the lack of options, because Sony has finally announced they are working on a military turn-based strategy game. Called simply Field Commander, SOE's strategy game will hopefully give us armchair generals a taste of some portable warfare.

"Field Commander gives players the power to outwit the enemy at every turn because it focuses on what is important - strategy," said producer Clint Worley. "You can delve into the game's engrossing story while combating enemies alone, or utilize the impressive array of multi-player options and enjoy defeating your enemies from across the globe, country or office."

Those multiplayer options will include online multiplayer, so add another tick to the (slowly) growing list of PSP titles you can play to hook up with friends that aren't just within your Wi-Fi bubble. Also included are 30+ missions and 15 army divisions with 11 commanding officers scattered across land, sea and air branches of your pretend armed forces.

Little else is available at the moment, but as soon as Sony starts coughing up more info, we'll have it here.
