Ys for You and Me

Remember Konami’s action RPG from last year? Imagine that, PORTABLE. Therrrre you go.

In an era where big-name role-playing games are distinguished by over-the-top cinematics and robust, recognizable voice casts, it’s rather reassuring to see old-school RPGs holding their own. Ys: The Ark of Napishtim proved it could do just that a year ago (wow, has it really been that long?), but for non-PS2 owners who might’ve missed out (or heck, anyone looking to give the game a second go in a slightly altered fashion), the action RPG goodness has now landed on the PlayStation Portable.

Adol Christin is back in the role of hero, this time on the hunt across several islands to track down a trio of elementally-powered, and more importantly, magical swords. From there on in, things get familiar: load up on items and equipment, take on fearsome opponents in real-time battles, employ a vast arsenal of weapons and magic, and heck, have a ball doing it!

But what’s a sized-down port without some delicious exclusive bonus content? Here, it comes in the form of new animated cutscenes, unlockable videos and music that are playable through a custom Ys Media Player and a character database to fill you in on the hazy details behind the cast of heroes and villains.

Ys: The Ark of Napishtim is venturing to stores as we speak, but like the smart shopper you are, you probably want to dig our preview for our thoughts before buying it, right? …Right?
