We’re Under Attack… Again!

Worms are back to invade our precious handhelds and we couldn’t be happier.

If there’s one sheep-lobbin’, trash-talkin’ strategy series that PC, console and handheld owners across the board are likely the agree on, odds are, it’s Worms. The turn-based wormageddon has shopped around as many platforms as it has publishers. Last year’s Worms: Open Warfare marked the series’ bold introduction onto the next-gen handhelds. As it turns out, we weren’t the only cats on the block who dug launching homing missiles and banana grenades whilst waiting in the doctor’s office.

Yes, friends, THQ is sending in a second wave of the spineless ones in the form of Worms: Open Warfare 2. Big addition numero uno? It’s online, allowing players to throw down wirelessly with anyone in the world across the game’s humorously parodiable landscapes, reliving the Spanish Armada, World War II, and of course, space wars. Stats will be updated daily and those truly thriving for the top spot can see their achievements in stone… rater, tallied via the official Worms website.

Oh, but there’s more. Classic Deathmatch has been revived, an added Firing Squad will have you nailing those tricky trajectories in no time, and an assortment of new single and multiplayer modes like Rope Race, Fort, Puzzle and Campaign should prove plenty challenging for newcomers and vets alike. Customization options are also back with a bang, including custom landscapes, team flag editors, and a more modified hats, tombstones and victory dances than you can shake a wiggly digit at.

And weapons? We got weapons – nearly a dozen new’uns: Bunker Buster and Buffalo of Lies are new and predictably a riot, while returning classics include Super Sheep, Concrete Donkey and (hooray!) the Holy Hand Grenade. Commence happy dance now.

The destruction cometh to the PSP and Nintendo’s DS this summer. For a glimpse of the action, we kindly forward you over to the official Worms: Open Warfare 2 website. They mean business.

[UPDATE] THQ has hooked us up with the first battalion of screens. Take a look!
