XSEED Brings Valhalla Knights Stateside
It's a freakin' Norse overload these days.
Published: October 4, 2006
Recent weeks have brought an unusually high number of games with Norse mythology tied in. Square Enix offered up a pair of games based on Nordic themes with Valkyrie Profile: Silmeria on the PS2 and the remake of the PS one original in Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth on the PSP. Okay, so that's only two, and they're basically sequels, but it's still twice as much Viking lore as we're used to seeing.
And apparently it's something that isn't going to stop any time soon. Right around the switch over to 2007, XSEED Games will be localizing and releasing K2's Valhalla Knights, an action RPG with at least passing references to Nordic deities. There's... um... well, there's the story, which has... okay fine it's mostly the title. But there's still the 150 different enemies, the six-character parties in five race (Machine, Human, Halfling, Elf and Dwarf) and eight class (Mage, Priest, Fighter, Knight, Thief, Ninja, Samurai and Anchor) flavors, plus that whole storyline thing could end up being rather interesting. Want to know what it's all about? Quick, Ctrl+V!
"A place that was forgotten from history, where humans, elves, dwarfs, halflings and other various races lived together in harmony…it was a paradise, surrounded by deep green forests and crystal clear streams.
However, the roar of the demons tore apart their peaceful lives. It was the return of the Dark Lord, the previous ruler of the land, which sparked a new round of battles which would eventually encompass all the races.
After years of fierce fighting, the Dark Lord was sealed away by the hands of the hero, Rastul. But from the blood of the demons, the land had been cursed and the sky lost its light. The cursed land entrapped the people, making every waking moment feel like an eternity. Eventually the land once known as a paradise came to be known as “The Cursed Land.”
One day, a youth wakes up in this land. In this land full of despair, the youth searches for his/her lost memory. What lies ahead are the discovery of his/her memories and the future of this forsaken land."
Oooooh, fantasy-riffic! Still, the promise of two-player co-op (though we're still not sure if it's just Ad-Hoc or Infrastructure too) and vs. play, real-time battles with enemies you can actually see (read: no random encounters) and plenty of variety to the world (XSEED lists tunnels, dungeons, forests castles and "an old ninja village") means this could very easily be the kind of deep action RPG that the PSP so desperately needs.
We'll get our first peek at the K2-developed title soon, but the wait won't be terribly long, as it'll hit some time in the first quarter of next year. We've got plenty of screens to tease until then, so take a look.
