Serving Winners Abroad

SOE's essay contest is at a close. Find out who won some free games inside.

A couple weeks ago, we tipped you off to a little publicity stunt Sony Online Entertainment was throwing that would give troops stationed abroad a little extra reason to smile. It was tied in with Field Commander, of course, but, in a surprisingly respectful move, SOE didn't beat entrants or those looking for more info over the head with the license.

The idea was simple: write an essay telling SOE why a loved one stationed far from home deserved a couple of games. See, the key here is that all these PSP games were Infrastructure-enabled, so as long as the troops could slip into a Wi-Fi bubble, they could play with friends and family at home -- or just use the two copies of the game they were getting to play locally with some friends. Either way, it meant free video games.

“Being stationed overseas, far away from loved ones, is a situation that the majority of us can’t even come close to relating to, but can certainly empathize with,” offered Laura Naviaux, SOE's Senior Brand Manager. “Knowing that many of those serving overseas in our military are avid gamers, we wanted to make it as easy as possible for them to feel like they were at home playing games with their family and friends.”

All the winners picked up two copies of Field Commander, FRANTIX, GripShift, and both Untold Legends PSP games, the original Brotherhood of the Blade and the recent sequel, The Warrior's Code. They also got two Field Commander shirts and, perhaps most impressive of all, a $500 Sony Style gift certificate. Oh, the things we could buy with $500 at SonyStyle.com.

The winners are:

MSGT David Langdon, stationed in Iraq, nominated by Shannon Langdon on behalf of her husband
SGT Eric Frock, Task Force Pacific Vigilance
Major Julian Bond, Company Commander for the 756th Transportation Company, "Road Dawgs" in Iraq
David Nicholson, Communications Squadron at Osan Air Base, the Republic of Korea, nominated by Christina Nicholson on behalf of her brother
David J. Colon, TSGT, USAF, Forward deployed, Baghdad, Iraq, nominated by Chris Iorio on behalf of his son.

Congrats to the guys that won, and we wish them a safe return. Maybe we'll see you guys online!
