A Handheld Offering You Can’t Refuse

EA takes the mob war to retail.

Game companies have a hell of a task on their hands these days in trying to push their established franchise not only across all current and next generation console systems, but on the handheld market, which is as prominent as ever. The trick, it seems, is to tailor to each in a slightly different manner: put your core game out on the home consoles, give it a customized facelift for its next-gen outing, and for portables, try to tweak the game formula so it adapts the respective handheld, or if need be, just stuff it full of bonus content.

Though normally not one to play by the rules (zing!), Electronic Arts is going a very similar route with its digital take on The Godfather franchise. Current-gen console owners got their fix way back March, and after a few months of necessary tweaking (read: rebuilding from the bottom up), the rest of us can now say the same, with The Godfather Mob Wars making its hit on PSP shelves today (hand-in-hand with an Xbox360 version of the original).

Custom-build for Sony’s baby brother, Mob Wars puts players to the tests through the Corleone ranks, but in a more strategic fashion. One turf at a time, wanna-be mobsters will have to direct their goons through the streets of New York City and war it out with rival gangs in order to gain Big Apple territory, one slice at a time.

And the best part? Ready for it? Authentic voices! That’s right, folks, James Caan, Robert Duvall, Abe Vigoda, and the late Marlon Brando have shown some portable luv in reprising their roles in the game and offering the necessary pipework.

The Godfather Mob Wars has already seized retailers, demanding a ransom of $39.99 and official permission from mommy or daddy. High demands, huh? We’re counting on you to diffuse the situation.
