Tekken to the Streets

Ohoooo, so punny it hurts! Oh, no, that's just physical pain stemming from a joke that bad.

Every time we hear someone talking about the PSPs lack of good games, it nearly stops us in our tracks. Lumines, Daxter, Libery City Stories, Exit, Race Driver 2006, Gradius Collection, Metal Gear Acid 2, WipEout Pure, Virtua Tennis, Syphon Filter, Alpha 3 Max and Guilty Gear Judgement are all reasons to own a PSP.

The latter two may be of particular interest to those looking for a 2D fighting game fix, but for 3D goods, there is but one name synonymous with the PlayStation platform: Tekken. Namco's flagship fighter has been a staple of every PlayStation release thus far, and each time it's released, the Japanese developer finds a way to coax power out of the console in ways previous developers never could. For the PSP, it's a butta smoove 60fps for fights, along with some of the prettiest visuals ever seen on that sexy little 16:9 screen.

Tekken: Dark Resurrection is a series fan's wet dream: action that's as fast and smooth as it is on the PS2 or in the arcades (the game is actually a port of the arcade game, which is in turn an update of the original Tekken 5), plus all the goodies one would hope for from a home Tekken release. Beyond the updated roster of characters (featuring two new ones, Dragunov and Lili), rebalanced movesets, and how-can-this-run-on-PSP graphics, there's the return of Tekken 3's Tekken Bowl Mode, improved character customization, and online play against other PSP owners' ghosts -- recorded data that mimics their fighting style that you can download.

Best of all, the game is available now. As in this second, as you should stop reading and drive down to your nearest game store and get a copy. No, wait, on second, though, take a laptop with you and load up TPS and show it to the game store clerk. Don't have a laptop? Steal one! Whatever it takes to get down there and share the love, man! Or... just drive down and pick up a copy, either way, Tekken awaits you.
