These Are the Tales of the World

And Namco Bandai is ready to tell ‘em in an all new Tales game for the PSP.

Fans of the Namco’s trademark Tales series might have found themselves feeling woefully gypped when a remake of Tales of Eternia for the PSP (which hit the original PlayStation in 2000) saw release in Japan and Europe, but was nowhere to be found on U.S. soil.

Role-playing fans, we feel your pain (I mean, c’mon man, portable Tales), but thankfully so does Namco Bandai, who announced today its plans to bring Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology, the latest in its long-running lineage, stateside and intact with full-on character customization, an innovative free-roaming battles system and just a few notable cameos.

In the once peace-loving, tree-hugging world of Terresia, a black-hearted creature, ominously known as The Devourer, has begun wreaking havoc and cursing the land with darkness. In a final cry for help, The World Tree (which created and continues to protect Terresia, as any motherly figure would) has summoned the help of a lone hero as the world’s saving grace. That hero is you, and the epic battle to save this land begins now.

Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology is the most in-depth RPG title to date in the Tales series as the player is thrown into an epic journey filled with popular classic characters from previous Tales games and compelling events that unfold in a dramatic fashion,” Makoto Iwai, Senior Vice President and COO, Namco Bandai Games America Inc managed to make out in a single breath. “From the moment they turn on the game, players will be engaged in the popular free-roaming battle system Tales games are known for and a story that will submerse the player from the first scene to the final battle.”

One of the game’s immediate draws comes with a crafty create-a-hero system, which lets you, the player (yes, you), tweak everything from the hairstyle, job class (with four available initially --Warrior, Thief, Priest, and Mage – and many more to unlock) and even the voice of your protagonist. Through your travels there will be hundreds of items (800+!) available to acquire, equip and even trade wirelessly, with an instantly identifiable cast joining you in this brand new tale: Stahn Aileron from Tales of Destiny, Reid Hershel from Tales of Destiny II, Lloyd Irving from Tales of Symphonia and Luke fon Fabre from Tales of the Abyss, in addition to several new faces.

The adventure begins summer 2007, and we can tell you already how much you’ll have to shell out for it: $39.99! Ok, so that’s not terribly surprising… but these first screens might be!
