SEGA Celebrates Sonic's Sweet... Fifteen
Crap, and we were on a roll with the alliteration thing.

"Sonic's 15th birthday is a landmark occasion bringing SEGA and Sonic fans together to celebrate the hedgehog's trademark speed, heroism, and attitude," squealed Scott A. Steinberg, Vice President of Marketing, SEGA of America, Inc. "The breathtaking speed and gameplay innovation that Sonic introduced in 1991 will reach new heights in Sonic The Hedgehog, Sonic Rivals, and Sonic's new adventure for the Wii. These titles continue a super-Sonic legacy of ground-breaking gameplay and story elements that only next-gen consoles can deliver."
Apparently SEGA is bringing together fans of the company and their iconic mascot together by... um, selling them more games. But hey, capitalism is nothing if not a celebration of success, right? No? Fine, we tried. At least the big S is pumping out new titles for two out of the three Sony platforms to kick off the 15th Anniversary of the original Genesis release on June 23, 1991 (write that down, you can use it to amaze friends).
Those two games, the simply-named Sonic the Hedgehog on our fancy new PS3 and racing-oriented Sonic Heroes on the PSP, do offer wildly different takes on the Sonic universe. The latter is actually being developed outside of the hallowed halls of SEGA and up in the picturesque pine tree-dotted landscape of Vancouver at Backbone Entertainment. That's in Canada. The former is being handled by none other than Sonic creator Yuji Naka, which means... well, we don't know what it means, but we're hoping it's good news.
Just for shits n' giggles, SEGA also prepared the fun facts of Sonic selling 44 million copies, and players collecting 66 billion+ gold rings and 500 million hours of gameplay. One can only assume how they came up with those figures, but if knowing Sonic's birthday didn't get you into the Mega-Nerd Club, knowing that stuff certainly will.
Yes, we're card-carrying members. It gets us mad chicks.
