Smart Bomb Details Emerge
Eidos' clever portable puzzler is finally revealed.
Published: February 18, 2005
After arriving as little more than a bullet point on Sony's PSP launch release list, Eidos has finally decided to share a little more info on Smart Bomb, the clever puzzler from former Tomb Raider developers Core Design.
Apparently, 10 years ago, a mystery terrorist held the world for random by deploying bombs in key strategic spots all over planet, all armed with sophisticated artificial intelligence to prevent tampering. To combat the threat, the Global Defense Force created the BDU, the bomb defense force, and sent in two highly trained operatives, Colonel Cage (who apparently lacks a first name) and Michelle Grace (who obviously doesn't). The pair defused the bombs by diving into the AI through an advanced virtual reality system, but not before rumors of the VR system's malfunction and the mysterious disappearance of Cage.
After a decade of quiet, a new network of bombs has been discovered, and once again the BDU reacts, sending a new recruit in under the wing of the now-experienced Michelle Grace. The bombs can only be defused by plugging into VR and plugging through a series of bomb modules divided into progressive tiers, which must be secured in a constant move into the detonator at the AI's core.
"Eidos is committed to delivering exciting, challenging content to cutting edge technology," boasts Eidos CEO Mike McGarvey. "Developing on the PSP provides the opportunity be part of the next generation of handheld gaming consoles and showcase the development skills of Core Design who are among the world’s most accomplished developers"
Smart Bomb's Produer at Core, Clint Nembhard seems to agree:
"Smart Bomb is all about compelling, high pressure gameplay. The player’s PSP becomes a bomb with over a hundred bomb-deactivating puzzles to solve against the clock. We've worked very closely with Sony to take full advantage of the PSP hardware and controls to make the Smart Bomb experience as much fun as possible.”
Keep in mind that Sony's mega-list of launch titles only referred to games being released around the time of launch, and it appears that Smart Bomb is being held back to launch with the Euro release of the PSP, which has been awash in speculation that there would be a delay. We'll let you know when the concrete release is set, but for now, dig on the delicious selection of screens we managed to pilfer from Eidos' heavily fortified FTP.
