Al Lowe Returns
The Leisure Suit Larry creator is coming out of retirement and you'll be thankful. Or else.

One of the best parts of being the first generation to see games go from Pong to, well, what games are now is that little mental milestones will forever be stuck in our heads. Back when Sierra On-Line and LucasArts were duking it out for the adventure game crown, a little series called Leisure Suit Larry straddled the line between being a solid puzzler and just a little bit naughty. If you were smart enough to figure out the cleverly posed age quiz ("Who was Nixon's VP" for instance), you were gifted to the perfect kind of titillation: a lovable loser who, if you managed to make it through most of the game, might just get a glimpse of a little pixilated boob before the adventure was done.
Of course the games themselves were just as good, pushing the boundaries of animation and 256-color (!!) art in the same way Sierra's other Quest games Quest for Glory, Space Quest, King's Quest and Police Quest did. This just had boobs. And we weren't supposed to be looking at them legally for a couple more years.
Now, thankfully, the creator of the Larry games (and dump bleach into the folds of your brain that house any memories of that horrid PS2 "game") has taken himself out of retirement to shack up with former McGraw-Hill and Mindscape producer Ken Wegrzyn to form iBase Entertainment, which will be developing the first Wegryzn/Lowe collaboration, Sam Suede: Undercover Exposure.
“I needed a good reason to abandon my strenuous life of pina coladas and golf, and this is it,” quipped Lowe, iBase's Chief Creative Officer. “Ken and I are creating a game that’s big on humor, and provides the fun and exploration lacking in many of today’s games. I’ve always wanted to play a game about a common man thrust into extraordinary circumstances and surrounded by beautiful women. Sam Suede is that game.”
“Al and I noticed how easy it is to find action comedy movies, but not action com-edy games,” added Wegrzyn, CEO of iBase before causing our spell checker to have a digital aneurysm and catch fire. “And thus was born the Action Comedy genre, with our first project Sam Suede: Undercover Exposure.”
Sam Suede (besides having a great name, though some of us are a bit biased), seems much like a Larry continuation. Sam is plopped onto Ecstasy Island during its Mystery Week Fantasy Camp, but quickly turns amateur gumshoe as the resort's owner is offed. Yeah, it sounds like a mash-up of Larry and Clue, but there's a very high likelihood of underboob or something. And plenty of humor. Both of which we value here at TPS.
We'll have more on the game as soon as we can get it.
