Genesis On PS2 and PSP
And this time, it's without homebrew... and with a price tag.

Retro compilations have become something of a cash cow in recent years as the kids the grew up in the 8- and 16-bit days find themselves with a hankering for bygone days. It's a sure sign that the industry as a whole is maturing (have you tried to get kids these days to play a NES game?) as the kids that originally got into video games are bringing their love of and familiarity with the medium with them as they get on in years.
One of the few upsides to SEGA exiting the hardware business a few years back was that they were going multi-platform. Nobody is jumping for joy at the demise of some of the best combinations of consoles and software in history, but the upside is that we get stuff like the SEGA Genesis Collection, a massive compendium of some of the best Genesis games ever assembled -- and it's coming to the PS2 and PSP.
"SEGA has always been, and will continue to be, an innovator of gaming technologies," glowed Scott A. Steinberg, SEGA of America's Vice Pres of Marketing. "The Genesis was the first 16-bit gaming system released in 1989, setting a new standard for gaming hardware technology for years to come. SEGA Genesis Collection will take gamers back to experience the golden age of gaming during the 1990s."
So, what's included in the Backbone-developed collection -- besides unlockable hints, a museum mode, interviews with the original developers and fun factoids about the games? For now, SEGA is only officially announcing a handful of the 30+ games, namely Altered Beast, Golden Axe, Phantasy Star, Shinobi III and of course Sonic the Hedgehog, but we're promised a full official list soon. The PSP version will offer some form of Wi-Fi multiplayer, though we're guessing it's just going to be local Ad Hoc games (we're just keeping our fingers crossed that there's at least Game Sharing available if that's the case).
Both versions are slated for a Fall release, which means we'll have just enough money left over from our PS3 purchase to indulge in a little retro action on our fancy new next-gen system. We're dorks like that.
