PSP Gamers Must Race for Their SOULS
Who would have thought a game with a title as cutesy as Pocket Racers would be so heavy?

If there's one genre the PSP is pretty well taken care of just two years into its life, it's racers. Even at launch, Sony's like handheld managed to pull in arguably the best Ridge Racer and WipEout entries the PlayStation has ever seen. Though it's currently sitting in limbo, Gran Turismo Mobile should satisfy the sim side of things, and in its stead, Race Driver 2006 has done a decent job of subbing in. A portable version of Burnout has kept most (though not us) happy, and there are plenty of other racers to entertain of those killer titles don't satisfy.
"Ah, but what about the miniature racing market," says Konami. We're a little freaked out that they're asking us these questions as we type up a story, but we'll bite. Micro Machines v4's lackluster showing means there really is no small-time-racer-in-a-big-world entry for the PSP, which is precisely why Pocket Racers, which, despite the cute name, deals with racers driving... for the souls. Dum dum dummmmmmm...
And really, that's all we know about right now. The storyline revolves around a Nemesis ("A righteous infliction of retribution, manifested by an appropriate agent") turning a bunch of folks into cars. No, wait, it gets better. He then shrinks them down to teeny tiny size and makes them race around ordinary tracks with the winner being allowed to keep their soul. Yeah, sounds like a crap deal to us too.
16 different vehicles ranging from off-road vehicles to street racers will tear around 15 common, everyday environs (but now they're huuuuuge, man, it's perspective!). And, of course, there will be weapons-based combat. Turbo power-ups, missiles, and so on will be the norm. Yes, you've probably gotten the same sense of déjà vu that we have, but hey, we've yet to play a good mini-racer on the PSP, so we're at least keeping our fingers crossed. As soon as we have some screens to show you (the game hits this fall, so we should have 'em soon), we'll make sure to pass things along.
