Pirates Ahoy!

Licensed games released around the same time as the movie?! CRAZY TALK!

Everybody loves Captain Jack Sparrow. He's heroic (sometimes), looks like he's drunk and/or high (all of the time) and (rarely) ever does things without a purpose. It's that kind of take-charge attitude and gumption that got him back the Black Pearl, his fancy ex-ghost ship that's the fastest on the Seven Seas, y'know. But that was the last Pirates of the Caribbean movie, and we are so over that. Actually, that's not true, we just watched the movie here recently, but that's because we had to... uh... test something. Yeaaaah, test to make sure our PS2 could still play movies, that's it.

With a new movie coming up (two of 'em, actually, since they were filmed at the same time, though we'll have to wait for the next one), and the licensing machine creating tethers between Hollywood and the games industry at an unstoppable pace, we figure it's about time that we saw a Pirates-themed game here (and no, Kingdom Hearts II doesn't count). Bonus points if it starts our friend Jack.

Oh, hey, here's one from Amaze Entertainment and Buena Vista Games: Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. How convenient and totally unexpected that it would share the name and main plotline of Cap'n Jack having a blood debt to Davey Jones (the locker guy, not the Monkee). In fact, being cursed and chased by the Ruler of the Ocean Depths and captain of the Flying Dutchman is probably good fodder for lots of sword fighting and drunken half-stumbling around, which is exactly what the PSP game happens to offer. Hooray!

"Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest lets gamers embark on a high-seas adventure that parallels events from the upcoming summer blockbuster film release," boasts Graham Hopper, SVP and GM of BVG. "As one of the most successful handheld video game publishers, BVG looks forward to offering gamers the opportunity to take the action from the Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise with them wherever they go."

Our buddy Graham pretty much said it all, now, didn't he? Though the game is technically in stores now, you might want to hold off on running out to pick it up (it is $40, after all) until we can deliver a final verdict, which will be coming along aaaaany day now. Keep your eyes peeled.
