Oh, videogame publishers, you never fail to surprise us with your acquisitions of film properties for those, ahem, "unique" movie-to-game renditions. Though we certainly won't knock it before trying it, Buena Vista Games has made public its plans to release Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, clearly based on the upcoming movie sequel to the 2003 blockbuster, on, get this, next-generation consoles and the two new members of the handheld family, the Nintendo DS and our fave, PlayStation Portable (with Amaze Entertainment and Griptonite Games handling the portable versions). The announcement comes after BVG's recent signing of UK-based studio Eurocom to develop titles for next-gen systems, which we have a hunch includes the PlayStation 3. Mmmm, PS3.

“The ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ franchise will develop over the next few years as one of the most exciting and important initiatives BVG will spearhead,” assures Graham Hopper, senior vice president and general manager, Buena Vista Games, Inc. “Our upcoming games will expand the Pirates world and allow fans to take on the roles of some of the most rousing characters ever created, and experience firsthand their perilous adventures.”

From what's been confirmed, gamers will have the chance to take charge with the movie's familiar cast including Captain Jack Sparrow, Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann on their adventures across land and sea (with a fair share of brawling to go around, it seems) in search of -- brace yourselves -- the Dead Man's Chest! You could cut the suspense with a stiletto!

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest is scheduled to set sail in summer of 2006 (that certainly gives us a timeframe for the next-gen console launches) in conjunction with the film's silver screen debut. Hopefully E3 2005 provides us with a sneak peek of what's to come, but nonetheless, stay tuned for more details, mateys!
