A Heroic Entrance

EA's World War II shooter is finally coming to the PSP.

Though the PSP has seen an impressive number of genres well-represented -- platformers, fighters, puzzlers, racers -- there's still one area that has yet to be nailed: the first-person shooter. Not that there haven't been attempts, mind you, it's just, well, games have moved past the single analog stick control system and replicating the experience on the PSP's lonely analog nub hasn't been terribly successful.

That's not stopping EA, though. They've deemed the PSP more than worthy of a entry into the long-running Medal of Honor series, and while it'll share the same control issues of other FPSes on the system, it has one very important thing going for it: history. In fact, Medal of Honor Heroes is something of a best-of collection, bringing back familiar faces from past games and introducing them into new missions.

Lt. Jimmy Patterson, the star of the original 1999 PS one game and MOH: Frontline will explore an as-yet unseen skirmish during his Operation Market Garden tour, Lt. William Holt from MOH: European Assault returns to Ardennes Forest during the Battle of the Bulge. and Sgt. John Baker from the PC expansion pack MOH: Allied Assault Breakthrough helps sabotage Italian coastline defenses. All three campaigns aren't remakes of existing games but new takes with familiar faces.

In fact, there are near two dozen of them that can be unlocked for play in multiplayer. Oh, did we forget to mention that? Yeah, it'll have online multiplayer. With 32 players, putting to shame even some next-gen offerings. How exactly EA is squeezing that kind of size out of the PSP hardware is beyond us, but if they can pull it off, it'll be a serious first for portables. If you just want to throw down with friends locally, there's support for up to 8 players in Ad Hoc mode with heavy customization, as well as a Quickplay Mode should you need to just jump in and cap some friends WWII-style.

"For the first time ever, the epic WWII battles synonymous with Medal of Honor can be played anytime and anywhere in the world on the PSP," explained Mike Quigley, EA's Group VP of Marketing. "The PSP-specific feature set, especially the 32-player wireless supported multiplayer, skirmish game mode, and unlockable characters are really what is going to give this Medal of Honor game an entirely new and exciting flavor."

This is indeed a big deal, and if the first screens of the game are any indication, it's shaping up to be rather pretty indeed. Co-developed between EA Canada and EA LA, the game should hit in time for the busy Holiday shopping season, and we'll be sure to give you updates as they come in. Check back soon!
