MLB 2K7 Has Signature Style

So what if it's the only MLB game hitting this year? Doesn't mean they can't keep adding new features, right? Right?

Oh, what hypocrites we are. Not 48 hours ago, we were bitching about how some might see Madden's exclusive stranglehold on the NFL license as an excuse for them to lower the quality of the product year-on-year because there's no more NFL 2K games to compete with, but when it comes to Major League Baseball games -- for which 2K Sports has the exclusive license), we're all happy claps and sunshine smiles.

Maybe it's just that there haven't been that many good baseball games in the past, or maybe it's that the license isn't completely exclusive; Sony is still pumping out their own MLB games every year, and they're awesome. So yeah, we're hypocrites, but at least we can talk our way out of it. And that's why we're in video games press! But seriously, most baseball games have sucked.

Visual Concepts, developers of nearly all of 2K Sports' games, aren't letting the fact that EA can't make a MLB baseball game ruin their happy time parade of info. See, in addition to pouring all the usual stuff that you'd hope for into the first next-gen sports entry like new camera angles, completely redone stadiums that use the extra horsepower of next-gen to make them shiny and fancy, and even stuff like bullpens and monuments and the all-but intangible fan presence in each city, VC is taking a personal approach to Major League Baseball 2K7.

Signature Style, they're calling it, and it means that over 150 players will have their own personal nuances and flairs added to the game, allowing folks to pick out a player just by the way they pitch or bat or catch. And of course Visual Concepts' head, Greg Thomas, is fully prepared with an impossibly excited quote about the new features.

"The attention to detail to all MLB players in Major League Baseball 2K7 is simply astounding,” the VC president exclaimed. “With the power of the next generation systems, we’re making big steps in delivering not only the exact look of each MLB player, but also how they act in the batter’s box, how pitchers deliver from the stretch, and the ritualistic movements of particular baseball players. Through Signature Style, we’re making each player in Major League Baseball 2K7 look and act more like their real-life counterparts, setting a new standard for all next generation baseball games.”

And there you have it. Fancy next-gen goodies for all involved (oh, except for the PS2 and PSP, which are still apparently kicking enough ass to get current-gen port-downs. Hooray for current gen too)!
