Bat-Cracking, Crowd-Roaring Portability
MLB 2K6 has gone PSP.
Published: April 18, 2006
One of the coolest things about the PSP is that it represents perhaps the first true platform to allow developers to create sports games that are on the same level gameplay-wise as consoles. With woefully underpowered hardware in the past, we were forced to deal with 8- or 16-bit-level "reimaginings" of the stuff that had been making steady progress since the 32-bit days.
Well, no longer. Sure, the PSP may have gotten off to a rough start, but it's making some serious headway, helped by publishers like 2K Sports and their deliciously exclusive MLB license. (Oh you publishers and your elimination of competition through large cash payouts, what sport won't you dominate by buying the exclusive rights to?)
The same Inside Edge-powered AI, the same World Baseball Classic, the same commentary, the same controls and the same online play (yes, really online -- ad-hoc and infrastructure) that you'd get in the console big brother that we loved so much is all here. Plus an exclusive Home Run Derby Mode. See? Console-level experience on a portable. Joy!
“We are thrilled to bring Major League Baseball 2K6, the most authentic and feature-rich MLB video game available, to the PSP system,” giggled Greg Thomas, president of Visual Concepts, a 2K Sports studio. “Baseball fans will now be able to have the ultimate MLB experience wherever they go. Not only will gamers enjoy a bevy of exciting features found in the other versions of the game, but a PSP system-exclusive Home Run Derby Career Mode as well.”
Sure, sure, Greg's just repeating us, but we'll let it slide (this time), because, well, he's right, there's a lot of stuff packed into the game, and if it's anything like the PS2 version, it could be a very compelling experience indeed. We'll have a proper review shortly.
