Madden Matchups for Charity

Who wants to watch pro football players play... um, digital football?

Here at TPS, we likes us a good cause. Something like, say, Child's Play, Penny Arcade's annual fundraiser manages to rank in tons of cash and toys for Children's Hospitals. Or, say, the annual TPS Get Drunk 'N Feel Ya Up Fundraiser to remind women that breast cancer awareness is important. Both are good causes, though the latter is completely made up and exists only in our collective philanthropic heads, so it's probably better that we replace it with an actual good cause. Like, say, GameStop/EB Games' Charity Challenge?

Think of it as a coming-together of the NFL and the combined might of specialty game stores everywhere. To help raise cash for their respective charities, Tim Brown and Kordell Stewart will square off at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children in games of Madden NFL 07. Brown will play for (wait for it) The Tim Brown Foundation with supports (what else) inner-city youth programs, while Stewart is aiming to toss cash at Hurricane Katrina-blasted John Ehret High School, the footballer's alma mater.

"GameStop and EB Games stores host tournaments around the world, all year long, but, we know that not all young gamers have the opportunity to get out and compete. Today we are bringing tournament action to young gamers and teaming up with two great former NFL players to make it happen," explained Daniel DeMatteo, Vice Chairman and COO of GameStop.

"With 4,500 stores worldwide, we help gamers of all ages move off of the sidelines and into the game with global in-store tournaments, online promotions and special events such as today," added Tom DeNapoli, GameStop's VP of Marketing. "Our team brings customers not only the hottest new releases, such as Madden '07, but events that clearly show why GameStop and EB Games stores are the gamers destination of choice."

Touching. Apparently the official site has a sign-up page for charities to register to bring the competition to their own local hospitals, and rec/community centers. If you happen to be someone looking to part with your funds, feel free to hit the site and throw 'em a bone.
