This industry has had a rollercoaster of a year. In what usually plays out as friendly competition amongst sports publishers erupted into corporate buyouts at the expense of consumer interest, with Electronic Arts securing the exclusive rights to the National Football League. With its admirable 2K football franchise suddenly stripped off a fighting chance, Take-Two Interactive responded just months later by fighting fire with fire, nabbing an exclusivity of its own on the Major League Baseball license.

The grand result of it all? Well, football aficionados were stuck picking up Madden NFL 06 this past summer, although the game thankfully proved to be another progressive installment in the series. Baseball fans will be left with the same limited choice next year, as 2K Sports has officially announced Major League Baseball 2K6 is currently in the works, slated for an early spring 2006 release. And as the sole holder of the MLB rights, the company is pulling out all the stops, prepping the game for a release on literally all major consoles.

"We've assembled an amazing team to deliver the highest quality baseball title on every major video game platform," assures Greg Thomas, president of Visual Concepts, a 2K Sports studio. "2K Sports has pushed the boundaries of our entire line-up of games this year and Major League Baseball 2K6 will be no exception."

For starters, two-time Gold Glove recipient and Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter will be gracing MLB 2K6’s cover. Gameplay additions are coming in all shapes and sizes this year, from a new movement system and realistic on-field player collisions to a flashback replay system to further deepen broadcasting authenticity to even a player morale system that’s sure to get the in-game drama brewing.

"With Major League Baseball 2K6, 2K Sports has captured the essence of our National pastime," suggests Derek Jeter. "It's been a great pleasure and honor to represent the finest baseball game on any video game system. I'm really impressed with the new graphics and features that Major League Baseball 2K6 will bring to baseball fans everywhere."

PlayStation 2 and PSP owners alike will be getting taste of the dirt this year. We’ll be back with those developing details as they… uh, develop.
