Lemmings Takes the Plunge
Off a cliff, into boiling magma, up an endless flight of stairs...

Lemmings are cute. They're also fairly stupid, hence the whole blindly following their brethren off a precipice to their doom thing. Luckily, in the video game world, they can be gently guided into doing any number of tasks, like parachuting gently to earth or, um, detonating themselves to create craters. Okay, so the digital versions look more like people than animals, and they can be gifted with special abilities we only wish we could do, but then that's what makes them fun.
So fun, in fact that the games been doing well for the better part of two decades. Portable gaming being the natural home for retro classics that it is, we weren't terribly surprised to see that there was another Lemmings game in the works. "Another" may not be the right word, here. Lemmings doesn't have a number slapped onto the title because it's not a sequel. It's actually a remake being handled by UK-based developers Team 17 (who have worked their magic on the last couple Worms titles).
"Lemmings has been a successful franchise for the past 15 years and is ideal for gamers on-the-go to play anytime, anywhere with its quick-pace and challenging, yet satisfying levels," quipped Susan Nourai, director, online and product marketing at Sony Computer Entertainment America. "With classic gameplay and PlayStation Portable exclusive features, we expect Lemmings to appeal to a wide range of gamers, including those familiar with the franchise and those new to the game."
Yes, surprisingly, SCEA is publishing the game for the PSP here in the States, rather than relegating the product to a 3rd party publisher. Though the game isn't getting a huge marketing push (we didn't even know the game had hit until we found the news in our inbox), it's still getting a little love, and we're all too happy to see it.
All 150+ levels (most just updated graphical versions of the classic puzzles, but there are 20 new ones done by the Team 17 crew) are on shelves now, or will be shortly. We'll have a review soon.
