PXLS GONE WILD!

Atari preps HOT PXL for a steamy PSP release.

One of things that developers have had to wrestle with is fighting the temptation to just do straight ports of a PS2 game to the PSP. Since the system is portable, Sony has repeatedly said that games should straddle that line between being a full console experience while still retaining the 10 to 15 minute chunks of gameplay that are needed on a portable. No small task.

Of course, if you're designing a game for the PSP from the get-go, you already have a head start. Such is the case with French developer zSlide and their upcoming salaciously-titled HOT PXL, a sort of urban-styled collection of 200+ mini-games all wrapped around the story of a skateboarder named Djon.

HOT PXL provides an entertaining new concept coupled with fresh and vigorous gameplay,” said Atari's Director of Marketing, Steve Tucker. “Within a market of ports, sequels and recognized franchises, Atari is proud to bring HOT PXL and offer a fun, unique, and original game that offers people easy ‘pick up and play’ entertainment.”

HOT PXL will pull from one of Atari's greatest assets: the rich library of old-school titles that were picked up when Infogrames bought up the Atari name and titles. 2D gameplay will mix with a heavy low-fi art style to create a handful of challenges that range from the obvious skateboard and BMX tracks (Djon is so xtreem) to an updated version of Frogger to... uh, stage-diving at a concert. No, we're so not making this up.

The PSP's Wi-Fi connection will be milked for downloadable content after the game's release, though we're hoping this isn't the first of many microtransaction-enabled games; it does hit right around the time of the PS3's launch in November (all we have now is a "Holiday 2006" release date). We're sure to get a peek at the game at E3 and the following months leading up to the game's release. When we know more, you'll know more.
