The Goblet is Go

New Harry Potter movie, new Harry Potter game. Surprised? Neither are we.

Few things are as certain as a long-running license deal birthing more game tie-ins as movies are released. Given that the Harry Potter franchise usually results in a competent game translation, it was about as sure a thing as one can find in this industry that we’d see a game based on the fourth movie based on the fourth book.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire just so happens to be that game. It’s an unexpected title, we know, and something that breaks tradition like few games ever have, but once the shock dissipates, we’ll let you know what to expect in the next chapter. To help ease you back to reality, here are some wonderfully dry and PR-fueled happy fun time statements from EA and Warner Bros.

"Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is the fifth Harry Potter videogame we have created, and we are incredibly excited with the fresh innovations that the team has brought to the game," glowed EA UK Executive Producer Harvey Elliott. "With high anticipation for the film and our strong relationship with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, we have been able to develop a game that complements the film in this exciting addition to the Harry Potter franchise."

"Working with EA, we look forward to offering players a highly developed Harry Potter game with Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, beamed Jason Hall, WB Interactive Entertainment's Senior VP and naked bridge jumper in earlier years (no, we're not kidding). "The game will possess the extremely creative aspects of the Harry Potter world captured in both the film and the book, giving fans a complete interactive experience." That interactive experience will come primarily in the form a new spell casting element that lets Harry, Ron and Hermione all cast spells with apparent rumble feedback while flicking things to an fro. Co-op spell casting will also mean two players can tag-team enemies with combined hocus pocus for added unique effects.

The game, like the movie which is in turn like the book, follows Harry as he's selected as the fourth entrant in the ultra-mysterious, mega-dangerous Triwizard Tournament. Aside from having a spellcheck-breaking name, the contest forces participants to go up against a dragon (complete with incendiary halitosis), a icy dive and rescue into Black Lake and navigation of the all-important maze… probably OF DOOM, but we don't really know because the lot of us are Muggles.

There's no release date set yet, but given that it's usually a good idea for games to launch around the same time as the movie, we're willing to bet it'll hit sometime then. For now, you can take a look at the first three Photoshop-licious images on the game page.
