Liberty City Comes to Life

And from the looks of it, it’s as corrupt and seedy as ever. First trailer and website inside!

When Rockstar Games announced its next installment in the legendary Grand Theft Auto series would be for the PlayStation Portable, skeptics were… skeptical. How could an engine-pushing game of such scale and caliber be captured on this tiny handheld? And battery life, what about battery life? Where are my pants?!

Despite the naysayers (stupid pantsless critics), developer Rockstar Leeds seems quite determined in delivering a full-blown, living, breathing GTA game to the PSP without any sacrifices. Proof you such, you ask? How lucky you are that Rockstar has launched the official website for Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, and included in it the first ever trailer for the game. Oh snap!

As riveting as ever and about 80 seconds in length, the teaser is consisted mostly of in-game cutscenes (with some gun-totting and car stunts on the side, of course) to give us a peek at the cast of low lives, big shots, and everyone in between whom we’ll certainly make an acquaintance with in the game. A paranoid Salvatore Leone (voiced once again by Frank Vincent, so it sounds) is certain that men like he and Toni (that’s you!) are through, though his lady, decked out in a cheetah outfit, looks to be all over you. Some of us in the offices could have sworn that the overweight strip club owner rambling on about the FBI hacking into his hard drive has Seinfeld’s Jason Alexander to his name, but that remains to be seen. Needless to say, we’re ecstatic as to what’s in store on our return back to Liberty City (actually, since it’s a prequel, we were never really there in the first place, but on the other han… ahh, forget it, you know what we mean).

You’d be a fool to pass up browsing the official website. Fool, we tell you! Although seemingly low on content, a look through the Liberty Tree inbox will reveal a host of characters and their rightful establishments (not to mention those loveable, processed advertisements!) bound to appear in the final product. A cop named Leon trying to extract money from a “friend” by threatening him with a meat clever, a bottle of household bleach, and a hockey puck? It’s like Billy Madison all over again! …just without the sexual innuendo.

So what do you say? Hit up the spankin’ new trailer from our Media section as well as that awesome site we've been telling you about? It’s a plan! October 25, 2005 is the release date we’re eyeing for now… keep it here for more.
