International Footy Tunage
FIFA's soundtrack this year is more worldly than ever.
Published: August 18, 2006
Though the FIFA franchise has always boasted a solid mix of tunes that came from beyond American borders, in recent years -- perhaps as part of a desire to just combine all the regional soundtracks into one singular offering -- the tunes that EA Sports has picked have become increasingly infused with world music. Well, worldly music anyway. Think less tribal chants and more rock from abroad.
This year is no exception. In fact, if EA's enthusiastic press release is anything to go by, it may well be the biggest that they've ever assembled, and though we're sad to see there doesn't seem to be nearly as much of an electronic presence as in years past (the FIFA theme was often composed by artists like Paul Oakenfold and Robbie Williams, and Moby, Timo Maa and The Crystal Method have all supplied headline tracks), it's still a rather impressive list of songs.
“No sport is more celebrated around the world than soccer, so what better way to live the magic of the real-world game than by listening to the anthems and songs that will be discovered by soccer fans worldwide as they play through the season,” gushed EA's Steve Schnur, Worldwide Executive of Music and Music Marketing.
Before we get to the actual tracks, it should be noted that EA went with something a little different for the commentary and ambience this year. Depending on how the flow of the game is going, a layered crowd response will grow more or less impatient or celebratory, and the actual comments from the announcers will reflect things too. Though it's doubtful we'll get anything like the run-up-into-a-huge-scream of some soccer announcers, it's still a solid start.
