D&D on PSP!

Atari is making sure you can geek out wherever you go.

The modern day role-playing game may be trademarked by flashy combat and spectacular cinematics, but there was a time when the genre was no more than a fantastical game played with dice upon tabletops. We're talking Dungeons & Dragons, man, and if you've never had the chance to kill your afternoons, taking part in mythical campaigns with your fellow ner--err, friends, you soon will.

Thank Atari for this one, as the company has put that coveted D&D license to use, giving the franchise its first ever appearance on a next-gen portable system with Dungeons & Dragons: Tactics. True to its roots, the game will make use of the D&D 3.5 rule-set, as pioneered by the Wizards of the Coast, letting players take a party of six through treacherous environments in a turn-based action-driven adventure.

"Dungeons & Dragons: Tactics will offer role-playing game fans and PSP system owners the only chance to bring this fantasy-based game wherever they go," promised Rick Mehler, Director of Marketing, Atari, Inc. "With wireless cooperative game modes, downloadable content, customizable characters and the acclaimed 3.5 rule-set, Atari is thrilled to extend the D&D world to the handheld market."

Players will see the role of a mortal child, caught in the struggle between two competing dragons striving for godhood. Based on which quests they choose over the course of the game, which play out as a series of adventures encompassing various objectives, they will side with either good or evil, and thus dramatically alter how the story ends.

D&D: Tactics will offer all the base character classes you've come to know and love, including Barbarian, Bard, Cleric, Druid, Fighter Monk, Paladin, Ranger, Rogue, Sorcerer and Wizard. Five Prestige Classes are also here, in addition to a pair of Psionic classes, the Psion and the Psychic Warrior. For you customization nuts, characters can be decked out and stored, with as many as your little heart -- or in this case, memory stick -- can handle.

Did we mention the game also sports full-blown wireless capabilities? Embark on the single-player campaign with a group of friends in co-operative mode, duke it out in a series of randomly-generated special arenas in Deathmatch mode, or even nab downloadable content and have a ball across new dungeons maps. No, really, we insist.

"The PSP system has proven to be a very exciting platform to work with and an ideal choice to expand the world of Dungeons & Dragons within the interactive gaming space," offered Jerry Chu, Senior Licensing Manager, Hasbro. "Making full use of the PSP system's unique capabilities, gamers will be granted an accurate D&D experience and story combined with a robust multiplayer system and the ability to extend gameplay thru downloadable content."

The role-playing game that started it all returns to glory this holiday season. We'll be making a magical quest of our own to the L.A. Convention Center in a week, so check back then for the updates!
