Budokai for the Portable Guy

The Dragon Ball Z series has thrown down on almost every console fathomable (read: the current generation and then some), but never have Goku and co. kicked a bit of mid-air ass on the PSP. Not until today, that is.

Atari has dropped the good word that Dragon Ball Z: Shin Budokai is in development for Sony’s handheld. From Dimps, the same team that churned out the Budokai series on consoles, this portable puppy packs all the furious combat that DBZ is known for, even getting in on the WiFi possibilities with multiplayer gameplay.

"The Dragon Ball Z high-speed, high-energy fighting experience is a perfect fit for the wireless multiplayer capabilities of the PSP," offered Matt Collins, Director, Global Brand Management, Atari, Inc. "For the first time ever, players will be able to challenge one another wirelessly and create virtual Budokai tournaments just about anywhere they go."

Game modes come in seven assorted flavors, including a story mode that will have you clobbering the DBZ universe’s most notorious bad guys. The combat is as comprehensive as ever, with an enhanced Saiyan Overdrive Fighting System that allows for counter-attacks, super high-speed bouts, flight and Ki (energy) management. Eighteen characters in all will be playable, all who will have the almighty ability of pulling off in-game transformations, evolving them to more powerful forms. The cast includes the prestigious prize fighter Pikkon, and an all-new stage from the Janemba movie even makes an appearance. If our math is correct, we conclude that’s just about all the resources you’ll need to take your best friend to the cleaners in the wireless battleground.

Dragon Ball Z: Shin Budokai will be rumbling in retail this March. For now, we insist you peep at the first screenshots of the game we’ve posted for your viewing pleasure. ...Please?
