Time to Fight for NY All Over Again

Yes, that's a headline about that Def Jam fighting game finally hitting the PSP, good eye.

The PlayStation Portable, for all the horsepower that it sports, has been home to one very obvious sticking point for a lot of people (hint: take out the first s in sports), though it is getting a little better. That doesn't mean port-o-rama is completely dead, nor will it stop EA from kicking over a retooled version of the PS2's surprisingly good Def Jam: Fight for NY. Ah, but this is Def Jam Fight for NY: The Takeover which means, of course... that it has a longer title.

Okay, so there's more to it than that. In fact, there's quite a bit more. You'll still get the same fighters (many of whom are Def Jam staples with their own fictional characters), arenas and moves that were featured in the console version, but as per Sony Computer Entertainment America's royal decree that PSP ports get a little extra sum-sum before they get approved, there's actually new arenas, moves and a new storyline that should help link together exactly why you're kicking the crap out of various hip hop stars (and yes, you need a reason -- at least in this game).

The core of the game is still the Create-A-Player Mode, that allows you to deck out your custom character with a ton of clothing, physical and blingalogical (yes, we tried to make up a new word for an already made-up word) options. EA Canada packed in a whopping 180+ new moves, included the 40+ rappers-turned-brawlers from the consoler version, added wireless Battle and 1-on-1 Modes, and, we're sure, many other fancy numbers as well, so even though it's the same game you played on the PS2, it's different.

The game is officially in stores as of the second you read this (yes, EA can totally detect that), and will set you back $40. We'll have a review in a few days if you can hold out that long for a verdict.
