With any hope, 2006 will be a year for publishers to get a move on in getting their trademark franchises to the handheld realm. Capcom, for one, already has the likes of Mega Man, Street Fighter and Viewtiful Joe prepped for PSP release. Not too far behind is Electronic Arts, in addition to a portable version of its prized Fight Night series being in the works, its gritty hip hop fighter is also getting sized down. EA gave word today that Def Jam Fight For NY: The Takeover, a prequel to the original Def Jam Vendetta, is in the works for the PlayStation Portable.

"We are excited to continue our strong relationship with Def Jam and bring this critically acclaimed franchise to the PSP for the first time ever," approves Craig Rechenmacher, Senior Director of Marketing for EA. "The exclusive new fighting moves, new gameplay content and original story mode bring a completely fresh Def Jam experience to the handheld."

The aforementioned features (way to go, Craig!) are countered by others that Def Jam fans should feel right at home with. For one, the cast of characters is rife with hip hop influence (and, well, then there’s Carmen), and includes Busta Rhymes, Carmen Electra, Lil' Kim, Ludacris, Method Man, Redman, Snoop Dogg, and Xzibit. Seeing as this is a prequel, players will have the chance to learn how D-Mob got a mighty iron first over New York City. A create-a-player feature allows for you to deck out your gangsta with the threads of Def Jam University, Phat Farm, Brand Jordan, Ecko Unlimited, Enyce, Rocawear, Sean John, State Property, Reebok, and more, and take them through the ranks and (many of them new) venues to earn that prestigious street cred. Heck, you can even take on a homie in a 1-on-1 death match in WiFi fashion. May the best playa win!

"Def Jam Interactive's first PSP title has proven to be an exciting and entertaining product. Again, EA has developed an unparalleled title and we are confident that Def Jam Fight For NY: The Takeover will go far beyond everyone's expectations," asserts Lauren Wirtzer, VP of Marketing for Def Jam Enterprises.

We’ll find out just what to expect the game’s spring release date rolls around. More to come soon!
