Death Jr.'s Turning Japanese

We think he's turning Japanese, we really think so.

The good folks over at Backbone entertainment have always thought of Death Jr. as more than just a video game property. Right from the start, we were hearing tales of how he's be in comic books and (if the powers that be had their way) cartoons and toys. No, DJ was always meant for better things.

Well, how's about we just go with a slight format change? And how's about we focus on someone besides DJ, hmm? Like, say, his girlie Pandora? And let's tell her tale through manga, the printed version of that anime stuff everyone seems to be eating up these days. And, just for kicks, we'll shack up with Seven Seas Entertainment, and get Blade for Barter's Hai to write and draw the whole mess. And of course by "we" we mean Backbone's parent company, Foundation 9. Yeaaaaah, that sounds like fun.

“We’re excited to see DJ, Pandora, and all of the unforgettable Death, Jr. characters come to life in such a popular format,” says Mike Mika, studio head of Backbone Entertainment’s Emeryville location. “Seven Seas has helped create a great visual concept and storyline for the manga that will attract long-time DJ fans, and will really appeal to a new audience.”

“A big driving force behind manga is the female audience, so it’s the perfect opportunity to put a shoujo manga spin on Death, Jr, ” says Seven Seas’ president Jason DeAngelis. “The Death, Jr. universe is one of those unique sandboxes that’s a blast to get in and play, and we’ll be taking these characters along a wild ride the likes of which they’ve never seen.”

That spin, in case you skipped the second paragraph of this story, is creating a story around Pandora rather than DJ. Like most manga before it, the story will be presented in a digest-sized little itty bitty format, printed in black and white and weighing in at an impressive 192 pages. The comic will hit sometime in 2007, but we've got some of the first images of the comic to your left there. Clicky and enjoy!
