Cannon Fodder Coming

The PSP will play host to Sensible Software's 18-bit classic sometime in 2007.

It's entirely possible that the folks reading this site (that would be you, yes) have no idea what exactly Cannon Fodder is. We're not talking about the phrase in the literal sense here (we used Fancy Capital Letters to make that more obvious), but the classic 16-bit series developed by Sensible Software, who are now a part of the Codemasters collective.

In it, four soldiers were charged with competing various military objectives, guided by the player either in a group or individually to their goal. Simple, no? The game was something of a Lemmingsed-out version of Commandos (the RTS game, not the rather painful first-person shooter), where the characters and their targets were quite literally the recipients of the game's title.

And now, some 10+ years later, the PSP will play host to the sequel. The same basic gamely and visual approach are being applied (though obviously they'll be in 3D, since 2D clearly has no place on a PlayStation platform, and certainly not a handheld), with a familiar (to those who know it) top-down isometric view that makes things like climbing into vehicles (with weapons, of course) and taking cover behind trees nice and easy.

There will be one notable addition to things, though: a new FTV channel will help relay highlights from the battlefield and showcase some of the wee grunts you'll be controlling. How this will work is still beyond us, but we'll be sure to find out soon. Also, we lied when we said there was one addition. Wireless play (we're guessing Ad Hoc here for now) will allow both deathmatch and co-op games with up to four PSP owners. Yummy. More as we get it.
