Whether you know it or not, the Internet these days is teeming with – no, not just omgpr0n – but wealth of Web-based games, many which have managed to rack up a substantial following. And when you’re just such a developer and the opportunity to bring your noteworthy into the console or videogame market, then you really know you’ve hit it.
The boys at The Behemoth can vouch, with their frantic Flash-based shooter Alien Hominid having gotten a full-fledged multi-console release in late 2004. We’d say there’s also a good chance acclaimed indie developer Pompom Software can chime in a word or two as well, as their latest online darling, Bliss Island, has been scooped up Codemasters and now has a one-way ticket to retail stores this winter.
A browser-bustling mini-game gone downloadable PC game, Bliss Island has been widely recognized for its skill-based, feel-good and, er, “funky” gameplay. For Hoshi the Zwooph (an adorable, blue creature with a handy little trunk, if you must know), the days are spent putting his puffing powers to use, making clouds for his humble tropical island and its joyful residents. But once Fridays roll around, Hoshi puts this useful skill of his to use in a wholly different manner: taking part in a series of games and challenges with his pack of fluffy pals.
The challenges themselves rely heavily on keeping multiple kinetic objects in motion at once, to, say, ricochet fruit into the gaping mouth of the Jigoka monster or protecting the giggling flowers from some incessant insects. Controls will be restricted to only the analog stick and an action button, making for a pretty self-explanatory point-and-fire mechanic. Simple... or is it?
Complete with over 80 distinct games and WLAN multiplayer to boot, Bliss Island will shine a bit of light on store shelves when it drops this winter. Curious as to what’s in store? Head on over to Funsta.com for a free 60-minute sampling of the game. And tell ‘em who sentcha too, will ya?
