More Monkey Business
New Ape Escape titles for the PS2 and PSP by early next year? We’ll take it!
Published: December 1, 2005
If there’s one thing we can’t get enough of, it’s monkeys in videogames. No, seriously, chasing down a frantic helmet-sporting primate with intent to whack him senseless with a club before netting him never fails in reminding us fortunate we are to be involved in this nutty sideshow of a games industry. Touching, isn’t it?
Perhaps that's why Sony Computer Entertainment America’s announcement of two new Ape Escape titles has us shamelessly doing the monkey around the office like nobody’s business. The chimp goodness comes in two separate forms: the much-awaited Ape Escape 3 for the PlayStation 2, and Ape Escape Academy, in kid-friendly and party game fashion, on the PSP.
It seems Specter is convinced that the third time’s a charm when it comes to conquering the world (this monkey’s got some tenacity). The evil-minded primate has sent his chimp campaign to hit the world where it’s most vulnerable… aired programming! With intentions to brainwash the masses over the airwaves (who would think such a thing could happen with TV these days), a hero… er, heroes must rise! Players take the role of either Kei or his sis Yummi on another ape-hunting adventure, with an arsenal of gadgetry once again at their disposal. The most unique gameplay addition here are the siblings’ morphing abilities, allowing to take the form of a knight, a ninja, and a kung fu master, just to name a few, when the time comes. Ape Escape 3 features two new mini-games, the monkey-tossing Super Monkey Throw Stadium and the battle ‘em out Ultim-ape Fighting, and in a clever collaboration with Konami, parodies on the Metal Gear Solid franchise will be high and wide in the Mesal Gear Solid mode!
For the kid on the go with a taste for ridiculous amounts of mini-games, there’s Ape Escape Academy for the PSP. Get your game on in over 40 party games, from hockey and golf to dodge ball and karate, or hit up a friend wirelessly for some Ad Hoc action! Replay the mini-games as you’ve won them, all along collecting the 300+ monkey statues as you progress academically. Graduation has never been so rewarding!
Both Ape Escape 3 and Ape Escape Academy have a release date in store – January 17, 2006 – so be on the look out! As generous as we are, we’ve fleshed out the games’ repesctive media sections with handfuls of first screenshots – hit ‘em up, yo!
