SCEA Readies “All-In-One” PSP Pack

Now we didn’t this one coming! Oh wait, yeah, we did kind of did.

It’s no secret that the holiday season plays a crucial role in the strategic outlook of game companies. After all, ‘tis the season for publishers to offer their proverbial cream of the crop and for system manufactures (well, the Big Three now) to offer up their respective platforms under enticingly reduced prices. Or so we’d hope.

To many, it seemed about due time for the PlayStation Portable to endure just such a fate. After all, our sleek little brick o’ luvin’ hadn’t seen a price dip since March (hitting the $200 mark at the expense of a few favorable accessories), and with the $149-priced Nintendo DS edging ahead in unit sales, even CNN.com was calling a PSP price cut for the holidays “imminent.”

And to that, Sony offered an adamant “nuh-uh.”

So instead, they’re doing the next best thing. Starting September 13 (uhhh, tomorrow!), SCEA will offer what it's calling an “all-in-one” PSP Entertainment Pack. Included will be the system itself, a stroke of four-wheelin’ goodness with ATV Offroad Fury: Blazin' Trails, a copy of [umd=55]Lords of Dogtown[/umd] on UMD, and hey, even a Sony 1GB Memory Stick Pro Duo, all for a suggested retail price of $249.99. According to the press release, the total cost of those aforementioned goodies purchased separately would run for $300 or more. Realistically speaking (and assuming you don’t mind some xtreeeeeme entertainment), it’s an extra $50 in your pocket, but we’ll let a Sony higher-up handle all that consumer jive.

"The PSP system's success stems from its ability to combine console-quality gaming with multimedia applications, and this new package showcases all of the system's strengths," grinned Peter Dille, senior vice president, marketing, Sony Computer Entertainment America. "Whether consumers want to pick up and play one of our top racing franchises, watch a movie, or enjoy their own music, photos, downloadable content and more, the PSP Entertainment Pack delivers it all in one convenient package."

But wait, there’s more!

"While the PSP system has out-sold all other next-generation gaming handhelds in the period since its launch, we expect this new offering to drive additional consumer interest and sales, particularly as the holiday shopping season approaches," Dille added.

And note the disclaimer. Gotta love those loophole-worthy claims of retail dominance! So there you have it, holiday shoppers: a sure-fire way to fulfill the wishlists painstakingly penned by those angsty XGames-adoring kids of yours. Look for it on store shelves tomorrow.
