Changes Coming to PlayStation Plus Instant Game Collection

The changes are small, but will bring some much-needed clarity and consistency to a game's availability on the service.

While the benefits to PlayStation Plus are many, perhaps the biggest selling point on the service is the Instant Game Collection. Since the inception of the service benefit, the Instant Game Collection (IGC) has given gamers access to numerous game titles, big and small, as long as you remain a subscriber. The service will remain largely unchanged, but as of July 2014, some minor tweaks will be seen.

Announced on the PlayStation Blog, two games for each PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation Vita will be added to the Instant Game Collection on the first Tuesday of every month (or the first Wednesday for those in the EU). When the PlayStation Store is updated, all six titles will be available to download, or simply added to your digital library, until the following month’s update. When that first-of-the-month update rolls around, the previous month’s titles will disappear from the IGC (unless you registered “Purchased” them like you do now) and in its place will be six new titles to grab. Previously, the Instant Game Collection was updated every week when the PSN Store updated, often leading to some confusion as to which titles were being added, staying, or getting the boot.

According to John Koller, VP of Platform Marketing at SCEA, the reason for the changes were to make it more convenient for Plus members. “Since we’ve seen how excited many of you are to download Instant Game Collection titles as soon as they’re available, we’ve decided to adjust the length of time each title will be available.” While statements from Sony haven’t detailed the business reasons or changes therein regarding games in the IGC, this change will be appreciably minor for most users (unless, of course, you only own one of the currently supported platforms).
