Almost as long as there have been video game consoles there have been Need for Speed games. I stoutly maintain that the 3DO version remains the pinnacle fo the series (those cops would give you tickets!) but it's fair if you think one of the dozens of sequels since then are a bit better.

Knowing that, it comes as no real surprise when EA announced that Need for Speed Rivals would show up on next-gen platforms including the PS4.

Featuring an evolution of the Racers vs. Cops theme that has been a part of the series lately, Rivals will offer single player, co-op and competitive racing all around the world. As a Racer, players will work to outfox the cops and gain infamy by pulling off daring stunts and escapes. The more infamous you get, the more cars you unlock. As the Cops, players will team up with other officers to stop those nefarious racers from breaking the law. Bust more perps and you'll unlock better police cars and pursuit tech.

The whole system is based around EA's new AllDrive technology that lets players hop into and out of online experiences seamlessly from their single-player game. You'll never know when one of your friends will show up in your rearview mirror.

“The Need for Speed franchise has been an industry leader bringing social competition to the forefront in games,” said Marcus Nilsson, Executive Producer, Ghost Games. “For the first time, players will have the freedom to seamlessly go from single player to co-op to multiplayer. In Need for Speed Rivals we are creating one game experience with one progression, where the freedom to play with friends is more fluid and accessible than ever before.”

Some of the other features EA is touting include:

Next-Gen Racing – Redview County is brought to life with stunning, next-generation detail and weather effects that force drivers to master the elements, as well as the competition.

Need for Speed Network Powered by Autolog – Gamers can compare stats and challenge their friends anytime, anywhere and then easily share their accomplishments with both friends and rivals.

Personalization – Drivers customize their ride with fresh paintjobs, custom license plates, liveries, decals, rims, and performance upgrades.

Pursuit and Evasion Tech – Street racing explodes with 11 upgradeable gadgets including turbo boosts, jammers and EMPs for racers, and shockwaves, roadblocks and helicopters for cops.

Wheee! Sounds fun! Those who just know they are going to be all over this can preorder now to get access to the Ultimate Cop Pack for free! Start your engines and get down to your favorite retailer!
