Wipeout HD is a very good game. But what sets it apart from many other great games out there is the love its developer Studio Liverpool is giving it more than half a year after its release. With Epic and Criterion leading the bunch of developers polishing their game even years after it hit stores and releasing most of the polish for absolutely nada, they end up making their great games really awesome. We here at TPS believe that this love is the best PR any developer can give their game. Luckily it seems like this commendable approach to fan service and super smart PR is being picked up by more and more developers like the latest member to our ‘Favorite Most Awesome Developers List’: Studio Liverpool.

US producer Daimon Pinnock posted the news on Sony's official PlayStation Blog earlier today announcing that tomorrow, April 8th, Wipeout HD is going to receive the V1.30 update for free. V1.30 might not sound like a major update, though the list of changes will probably make you think differently.

The first and probably coolest new feature will be Online Ranking in the form of a skill progression system. Similar to the two latest Call Of Duty games you will earn points by finishing online races which will then help you progress through the game’s 50 ranks. You will start off as a Wipeout Trainee only to race, shoot and boost yourself to the very top ultimately earning you the Wipeout Legend rank.

Furthermore each race will give you the chance to earn one of 33 badges the game offers for certain achievements in the race. Also the top three contenders will now be presented to everyone on a podium screen at the end of each race.

A major problem with the game’s online system was the absence of an option with which you could invite friends to an ongoing game. Studio Liverpool has addressed that issue as well and now you can invite your friends to any ongoing game or follow them into a game instantly without being invited (that’s how we like it, stalking 2.0). You’ll also receive a message informing you of any friends playing Wipeout HD online.

Last but not least there will be a spectator mode which allows you to choose between four different camera angles plus which ship you want to follow. Also you now have a couple more options when setting up a new online game. New is the following: An option to turn off HUD Weapon hints, the choice between a friends-only, invite-only or public game, the option to turn off barrel rolls and pilot assist plus a menu point under which you can set the number of laps one has to complete (no more than 20 though). See you online guys!
