Twisted Metal Pushed Back to 2012

Yet the end of 2011 is still loaded beyond belief.

So Twisted Metal will not be making its October 4th, 2011 release date. David Jaffe, co-founder of Eat Sleep Play, just confirmed on the PlayStation Blog that the game will be pushed back to "early 2012." Oddly enough, instead of the normal backlash that comes with a game getting pushed back, almost every post I have seen encourages the decision. Jaffe said in the post that the extra time for polish and tuning will make it "so much better than it already is."

There is, however, one other part of the equation. Anyone who has plunked down some cash on a pre-order or looked at the release dates for some of the biggest titles knows that the end of this year is packed with good stuff. Looking just at the October 4th release window you will see that the week prior has Ico and Shadow of the Colossus Collection, FIFA Soccer 12, and Pro Evolution Soccer 12. If Twisted Metal had kept its release date of October 4th it would have gone head-to-head with NBA 2K12, RAGE, Dark Souls, and Spider-Man: Edge of Time. The week after also features Dead Rising 2: Off the Record. That's not even getting into Batman: Arkham City (October 18th), Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One (also October 18th), House of the Dead: Overkill - Extended Cut (October 25th), and Battlefield 3 (also the 25th). And that's just October, I didn't even get into the titles in November, which are even bigger (I think just about everyone has something that they're going to get in November).

So needless to say, it was a fantastic decision to push Twisted Metal back. Even though I'm sure it would have sold well it would have been a lamb sent to the slaughter. Some of the games I listed above will inevitably get pushed back but October and November are still the two biggest months that I can really remember for the PS3. Twisted Metal would have gotten its sales but it will do better to have some extra time in the development oven.

Jaffe promises some more details in the coming months and as soon as we get hold of them we'll be sure to pass it along. With the extra money you're sure to save by this delay go treat yourself to something nice. Maybe go have some tiny fish eat the dead skin off your feet. You deserve it.
