Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas

Trrrsts in Vegas!

This sounds like a job for Team Rainbow. No, seriously, that's where they're headed.

Y'know, for a studio that spawned from the infrequent exchanges between a novelist and a British Royal Navy captain, Red Storm Entertainment (now wholly owned by Ubisoft) and its Tom Clancy franchise has certainly come a long way. Successive editions of the Splinter Cell, Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon series have become practically commonplace, ensuring that if we're not busy saving the fate of mankind as a secret agent, we're... uh, doing it as a counter-terrorist squad instead.

With Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter touching down in a matter of weeks (though all signs point to a PS2-less release) and Sam Fisher's next mission still few months off, it was only due time before the boys of Team Rainbow returned to their trrst-foiling glory. But in Las Vegas? Oh wait, we were supposed to build that part up.

Failed attempts at suspense aside, Ubisoft Entertainment has given word of an upcoming current-gen and, as always, hazy "next-generation console" release of Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas.

It seems those dogged terrorists have finally cashed in on a truly frightening opportunity: setting up shop in Sin City, where an estimated 36.7 million people pay a visit yearly. With an amalgamation of high-rolling casinos, glitzy resorts and countless other locales of debauchery held hostage, the elite Team Rainbow is ordered to step in and diffuse the situation and, heck, maybe even throw down a game or two of Blackjack while they're there.

"Rainbow Six is back and better than ever," blurted Tony Kee, vice president of marketing at Ubisoft. "Building upon the online success of the Rainbow Six franchise and harnessing the power of the next-generation experience, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas will be the benchmark against which all next-generation games will be measured. With Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter being released this month to wide critical acclaim, and Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Double Agent also due out this year, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas makes it a perfect trifecta for the Clancy series in 2006."

Trifecta! THAT's the word we were looking for! Here, watch this: Rainbow Six Vegas plans to deliver a trifecta of technological awesomeness with visuals, artificial intelligence and physics, all the handywork of Ubisoft's acclaimed Montreal studios. See, we can employ new vocabulary just as good! Uh, well.

Current systems and beyond should be getting a hefty plate of counter-terrorism, with just a hint of Vegas glam on top, when Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas launches in the fall. We'll make sure to report back on the potential PS3 status of this one, and for that matter, actually confirm that the PlayStation 2 won't be left out. We won't be fooled again...
