Ever since the debut of NBA Jam in 1993, there has been a split in the ranks of sports gamers. In addition to the hardcore, stat crunching, body painting sports fans, there now were non-sports gamers who loved to play this exaggerated arcade version of the sport. It even turned some of those sports haters into sports enthusiasts. (We loved the game but we never went that far into the abyss.) What was it that drew them into this franchise so much?
It was the over the top game play that these fans favored so much. They weren't locked into the constraints of rules and regulations made by normal sports titles. NBA Jam had tons of non related characters, mascots, and the ever so awesome "Somersault Bruce Lee Keeeeeyah" dunk. NFL Blitz had unorthodox plays, chokeslams, and late hits that probably would have ended NFL careers. Personally, the first time we heard "You're on FIRE!", we bleated like a happy little schoolgirls...we mean...like a tough football jocks. These were the aspects that made arcade type sports franchises into video game icons. Well there is a new kid on the block....and boy is he a BIGun.
2K Sports' The BIGS is that kid and it is gold! The BIGS (which alludes to the MLB Major Leagues) provides the over exaggerated gameplay you have been feenin' for in a MLB Slugfest-esque package. You want to break the bejeezus out of the scoreboard? Go ahead and send a fiery amalgamation of cork and leather its way. You can even create your own rookie from scratch and turn him from noob to elite through the course of the career mode. I can already smell the peanuts from the vendors at the World Series.
So July 25th, instead of sitting on your arse and watching a regular game, go pick up The BIGS and rob that homerun from thirty feet in the air. We can hear the "You're on FIRE" chants around the world now...
